The Dreaded UK Skills Shortage
Whether you’re planning to attract or simply retain, your staffing needs are likely to be affected by the UK skills shortage throughout 2015.
Both the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) and the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) agree that the UK is set to see a significant shortfall in UK talent over the coming year. Rob Wall, the CBI’s head of employment and education stated:
“Our most recent survey shows that skills shortages are becoming more acute, and risk acting as a break on our economic recovery. This is particularly true for high-level skills in sectors like engineering, technology, digital, manufacturing and construction.” [BBC, Dec 2014].
Regardless of your industry, many organisations are struggling to find the right talent for their business, resulting in inflated salaries or falling in to ‘salary-wars’ in order to retain or poach new staff. This is leading to new tactics by recruiters to support their clients as well as companies drawing up news ways to show they value their employees in order to keep them.
Whichever position you are in, your offer needs to be more than purely financial to get the best out of your staff and it is worth planning ahead of your staffing needs to give yourself enough time to find the perfect candidate.
