The importance of a relevant portfolio

A portfolio is a collection of your work, it’s a way for you to showcase what you can do and what you have done. Some businesses will ask you to bring a portfolio with you to the interview and some will ask to see this prior to interviewing you. Therefore, it is important it is up to date and relevant to the role you’re applying for.

Illustrate your strengths:

Be sure to include your best works to really showcase your skill set. You need to remember others are going to be applying for the same role and so the interviewer will look at more portfolios so yours needs to be impressive.

Be proactive:

If you know you want to go into a Marketing or Artistic role then start building your portfolio early. You may work in the local pub or a supermarket but there is no harm in trying to build on your portfolio. See if charities need help or start your own blog, keep working on it and you’ll soon build an impressive portfolio.

Keep your portfolio up to date:

I’ve mentioned this above, but it is so important you keep a consistent amount of work in your portfolio and make sure it is up to date prior to sending it over to the employer.

Keep it relevant:

Make sure your portfolio is relevant to the role you’re applying for. It’s easy to get carried away and include everything you’ve ever done but if it isn’t going to help you get the role you want, then you might not want to include it. Then again, if the work you’ve done isn’t relevant, but it is something you’re proud of and something you want to showcase then feel free to include it.
