Updating your profile on your CV

If you read our previous blog “How to write a personal profile for your CV”, then you’ll know your personal profile is an introduction. If you haven’t read it then click here, as it is closely linked to this blog.

It is important to capture the audience’s attention with your opening paragraph. You don’t want to be generic and you don’t want to be the same as everyone else. Luckily for you, we see hundreds of CVs daily, so we know what to do and what not to do.

It’s always slightly awkward when you need to write about yourself. It’s even more awkward when you need to do this in 5-6 sentences. You need to let the fear of talking about yourself go and just dive in!

You want your CV to stand out, so saying you have great customer service skills and are punctual isn’t going to cut it. You need to stop being generic and include the specifics.

The opening paragraph needs to be brief but it must have a lasting effect. A great way to do this is to back yourself, don’t just say you are passionate about HR, Finance, Tech etc… back it up. Say why you’re passionate!

You must tell a story; the employer needs to understand you and why you’re applying for the role. For this reason, you may have several personal profiles.

You need to select the one that best fits the job description. Including skills found in the job advertisement is a great way to be noticed. Just don’t include skills you don’t have, as you won’t be able to back it up at interview stage.
